satine @ 12:42 am: 您好!!
Hi! Taiwan ETA with a Critical Language award applicant here. I'm terribly nervous and having graduated this past December all I have on my mind is this Fulbright... and the possibility of not getting it.

However, to those who have been accepted, I was wondering how many students prior have been awarded the scholarship in your school? Not only am I terribly nervous because my school was naive about the whole process, but also because my college has had only ONE Fulbright Scholar. And it was a grant won in 93-94 for some research project on metals in the Czech Republic. (My school has a very large Fine Arts department.)

In relation: do you think that the fact that my school has not had many grantees may work in my favor? I am a double major in Asian Studies and English. My GPA is decent (3.5) and I've studied abroad twice in China (for Mandarin), once was through a Fulbright Hayes. My school is confident in me, but then I am the largest skeptic and my school the largest optimist. (It's like they've never seen anyone driven before and is astonished by that factor. UGH.)

AH!! Just wanted to share the anxiety and agony of being a Fulbright applicant!! The limbo is killing me, there are 12 more days, and if I get past that...it sounds like two and half more months? I don't know how I'm going to survive! But I guess, good luck to us all!! 加油!

It's pretty bad for me. I've gotten to the point of being neurotic. I think of all the ways I've screwed up on the application even to the point where I put the wrong home address which would mean I would never get my acceptance/rejection letter from them. And at the same time I'll have day dreams about giving English names to all my students as well as having English learning Karaoke. It's a sad and pathetic state I'm in. Of course, I assume we're in the same boat, which could ease our pains a little... I suppose.

How much can you taste your Bosnian ETA? It really kills me that we have only one shot at one country.

Email? For this first round in Jan, yes I believe so. But then beyond that I'm not so sure. I guess I'm too cocky and am thinking that they'll have to send the hard copy acceptance somewhere and that'll get screwed up or something. BLAH. See, I told you I'm going crazy.

Hi there, I applied for an ETA to Indonesia, and the waiting 'limbo' is indeed killing me. It will be nice to hear some news -- any news is better than this waiting business.

Best of luck!

no nothing! I am on the same boat as you, so I hope we all know at the same time. Would it really be fair otherwise?

Yeah, I mean, I love being home and all, but I miss the freedom and friendship of college.

I applied in Scandinavia, actually, for a full fellowship.

But you're right, I was in Budapest for a semester. Great and strange place to live. Good nexus for travel in all directions. The former Yugoslavia was my favorite, maybe tied with the Scandinavian states (weird pairing, I know, given their relative polarity).

My one lament was not getting up through Poland, Ukraine and Moldova. Ran out of time and money. I was going to visit Tiraspol. I would've had to bribe border guards! Some day...

Not Montenegro.... but Skopje (Macedonia), Pristina (Kosovo), Beograd (Serbia), and Dubrovnik, Split, and Zagreb (Croatia). Of course you knew the republics already, but for anyone else's benefit.

Hah, I have a strange fascination too. Unfortunately we can too easily see how that fragmented legitimacy leads to problems. Russia leveraging South Osettia and Abkhazia's quadi-independence to stand off against Georgia's pro-Western Government, on punishing Ukraine's likeminded ruling coalition, southwestern Italy's de facto Cosa Nostra's municipal leadership. I guess in the end though any citizen ends up caring about some degree of liberty and prosperity more than a nationalism. Too bad the latter's conflicts can too easily intrude in the former.

I still haven't gotten anything from Fulbright, nor has my FPA heard of anyone getting anything. And to think.. we might have to do this all over again for the host country's selections.

It seems as if there's quite a limbo going on, here. I find it quite difficult to wait for the "first-cut" decisions...

Any updates on this?

Hope it doesn't take until Saturday...

Still nothing on this end. I think if we don't have anything by 5EST tomorrow, it'll be Saturday.

Fulbright game

(Link)
The Fulbright grant is a strange animal. I feel like they intentionally keep it shrouded in mystery. This is my second time applying, last time I got through the preliminary judging but was shot down at the country level (applied to the Netherlands).

It's really just a waiting game ... which is a bit unfair considering that our lives are essentially put on hold until we know for sure what the results are.

Anyway.. last year first round I heard by email around Jan 31 and received my final decision near the beginning of April.

Good luck everyone. :)
